More

Major-General Sir A. A. Bowlby (1855-1929) wore this jacket, made by Saville Row tailor Hawkes and Company Limited. The single breasted wool jacket is decorated with Bowlby’s ribbon bars (collectively known as a ribbon rack) and brass buttons bearing the insignia of the British Army. The field jacket dates from the First World War (1914-1918), where Bowlby was consulting surgeon to the British Expeditionary Force in France. He later rose to become advisory consulting surgeon to the entire British forces in France and was instrumental in establishing well-equipped field hospitals.
