Glass specimen jar containg Kola nuts, Africa (tall cylindrical English jar), 1880-1920

African Kola nuts stored in an English glass jar. The active ingredient in kola nuts is caffeine. The nuts are chewed at community get-togethers, ceremonies and visits. Caffeine’s stimulating effect makes it useful in medicines worldwide. The first cola soft drinks were also made from extracts of the kola nut.
