Captain John Noel's cine camera used on 1922 Everest expedition

“NS No. 3 Kine’ Camera”, 35mm ciné camera, serial number 109. Sold under the Newman Sinclair brand name. Made by Arthur Newman in Highgate, London, c. 1922. Designed by Arthur Newman with input from Captain John Noel. Used by Captain John Noel on the 1922 British Mount Everest Expedition. Camera taken to an altitude of 22,000 ft to shoot footage for film Climbing Mount Everest. Fitting on top right for three-point motor. Focusing eye piece on left. Dials on rear of camera to control aperture, show film usage. Knob at lower bottom to mark film. Three external doors, operated with a ball and clasp. Two film magazines located at rear. Internal mechanism entirely visible to assist with cleaning and fixing in harsh conditions.

Lens mounted on the camera: one-and-a-half-inch special ciné express f/35 lens by Ross, London, serial no. 103365.

Canvas camera case with leather edges, velvet interior and leather handle for “NS No. 3 Kine’ Camera”, 35mm ciné camera made by Newman Sinclair, London, c. 1922. Significant damage to exterior canvas and leather edges from the 1922 British Mount Everest Expedition when the case was used to transport cameras used by Captain John Noel. Missing lock.

Three-point motor for “NS No. 3 Kine’ Camera"

Three-point motor for “NS No. 3 Kine’ Camera". Two protruding metal strips used to attach motor to a fitting on the exterior of “NS No. 3 Kine’ Camera”. Three points arranged in a circle at the centre of the motor that connected directly to the camera mechanism. Three screws at the top of the camera used to connect battery cables. Coiled metal rheostat on side with handle that moved up and down to change speed. Made by Arthur Newman at his factory in Highgate Islington c. 1922

Three film magazines (film boxes) - wooden magazines with metal cover, clasps and velvet lined mouths operated automatically by internal spring in camera when camera doors are locked. Designed to fit two internal slots at the rear of “NS No. 3 Kine Camera”. One spare found in canvas case used by Captain John Noel on the 1922 British Mount Everest Expedition.
