Glass decanter, mallet shape, scroll handle, plain collar and lip, c. 1710. Decanters with handles and stoppers appeared in the early eighteenth century and were often of varied section.Large surface areas evolved to facilitate the cooling of wines by immersing them in ice after decanting. Mallet shaped bottles are wider at the base than the shoulder and had a great variety of disc stoppers.
