Materia medica is a Latin term for the study of medical preparations, their sources and uses. It also refers to the ingredients ground up and used to make these treatments. The oak chest contains animal, vegetable and mineral substances. These include animal horns and claws, fruits such as apples, plus seeds and fossils. The chest may also have been a small cabinet of curiosities. It was probably made in the Netherlands.
