1x500g tin of Celevac granules (methylcellulose), by WB Pharmaceuticals, Bracknell, Berkshire, England, 1960-1985
Celevac granules treat obesity. This condition can increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes and stroke. The key ingredient is called methylcellulose. It is a bulk-forming laxative that acts on the gastrointestinal tract. The granules are taken with liquid half-an-hour before food or when feeling hungry. It swells on contact with water to create a ‘full’ feeling. This reduces appetite.
This 500g tin of Celevac granules was manufactured by W. B. Pharmaceuticals. Celevac is only available on prescription to individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 30. A BMI over 30 indicates obesity. However, BMI has recently been criticised for being inaccurate. Many athletes have a BMI above 30 yet are in fit physical condition. Side effects of the drug can include flatulence and abdominal swelling.
