Triptych mahogany medicine chest with hinged lid, swing front metal hinges and fittings, lock with key, compartments and drawers, Swedish, 1804-1818. Chest contains 8 glass bottles, 6 labelled, some identifiable as British; spare stopper; and six brass weights.

Parts

Triptych mahogany medicine chest with domed, hinged lid with metal carrying handle on top; double swing front; metal hinges, fittings, latch to left-hand swing front, and two locks. Inside the main chest is a shelf of nine compartments chest, the front five of which have arched windows to allow the user to see labels and contents of bottles stored inside, above a top layer of three drawers and a fourth drawer in the base. The left swing front is a single compartment above a single drawer; the right swing front has four compartments with arched windows above a single drawer. The compartments are lined in red textile, the drawers with marbled paper. The lid is lined with both marbled and blue paper, with two paper labels in Swedish. The left label identifies the chest as a ‘Hus- och Rese-Apoteque’ (Household and Travel Apothecary) prepared at Apoteket Kronan and signed by pharmacist Erik Olofsson Bylund; the right-hand label is titled "Underrättelse om Medicinal Wigterne" and provides the conversion table for the apothecaries' system of weights, and illustrates the symbols used. Chest is Swedish, c. 1804-1818.
