This leather pouch contains first aid equipment – bandages, dressing and medicines. Made by a Frankfurt-based company, Ludwig Hirschfeld, Frankfurt-am Main, the kit was probably carried by stretcher bearers who had had some level of medical training, in the German Army during the First World War.

Stretcher-bearers on both sides had a dangerous role, collecting and delivering the wounded to medical aid post while often under fire. For those wounded, the attention they got from the bearers in this first encounter could greatly influence their survival chances.
