Mahogany medicine chest, by W. Batka, Prague, Czechoslovakia, 1850-1918. Chest consists of lidded rectangular container. Back section has five compartments: four reach to the base of the chest; the fifth is shallow and contains a removable, velvet-covered wooden inset with four roughly ovoid and five circular holes cut out, to support bottles of the relevant size and shape. The front section has a tray with two metal handles containing square compartments for medicine bottles and jars of various sizes, which lifts off. Underneath is a tray with three lidded compartments, which also lifts by means of two silk handles. The left compartment lid is labelled 'Flor: / chamom: vulg: / Flor: / tillæ / Lichen / caraghen / Spec: althææ'; the central lid is unlabelled; the right lid is labelled 'Herb: / menth: crisp: / Spec: / aromatic: / Spec: emollient: / Rad: / valerianæ'. Behind the second tray is a secret drawer located beneath the shallow shelf built into the back of the chest, once opened with a silk handle, now detached.
