Model of a feathered paddle wheel, c. 1830. This model is of a type used on steam ships in the second quarter of the 19th century. The steel paddles are held in pairs on an iron bracket attached to a central iron wheel. At the point where the oblique wheels are nearest the central wheel, the paddles are feathered. Many patents for paddle wheels were filed during this period. The feathering is an improvement on this design.
