RAE RTV 1 (Rocket test vehicle) with perspex cover.

The Royal Aircraft Establishment's (RAE) Rocket Test Vehicle 1 (RTV 1) was an important research tool used from 1948 for developing and perfecting the fundamental requirements of missile flight. These included aerodynamic stability and control and 'beam riding' in which the missile would follow a radar beam to its target. RTV 1 was developed from the earlier Liquid Oxygen and Petroleum Guided Anti-Aircraft Projectie (LOPGAP). Test flights of RTV 1 were carried out at rocket ranges including Aberporth, Larkhill, Ynyslas and Woomera.
