Water filled rubber dummy used in underwater ejection seat trials by the RAE in Folland seat harness. Filled with water to make it as heavy as a human, this rubber dummy from the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough, Hampshire, was used to test ejection seats underwater. Test dummies, animals and even volunteers were used to test equipment throughout the Cold War. Procedures like submarine escapes could be dangerous and excruciatingly painful.
