Model corn mill, maker unknown, Lyons, 1753. Once belonged to Stephen Demainbray.
This model once belonged to Stephen Demainbray and was used by him in his lectures on natural philosophy. He had it made in Lyons while he was lecturing in France. The mill from which it was copied had been designed a few years earlier by M. Dubost to operate on the river Rhone. The mill was situated in a boat which was moored in the current. The flow of water turned the archimedean screw propeller which turned the upper grinding wheel underneath the roof.
Demainbray worked as superintendent at the King's observatory at Kew from 1768 and his collection of instruments and apparatus was absorbed into the King's own collection.
