Pye V4 12 " monochrome television receiver, tabletop model, single channel, Serial Number 985035, known as 'washboard' set, made by Pye in England, 1953.
The V4 is a single channel, table model with 12-inch screen. This is the best known model of the 'washboard' Pye range of sets. They included a number of innovative features including a tinted screen to improve the contrast, a black-level-clamp circuit which ensured that as the scene changed, the black level remained constant (now a feature of every television set). The glass screen at the front of this set is deliberately sloped, with the aim of reducing the effect of reflections from objects in the room. In 1955 a modified version called the V4T was produced, which had a 13-channel turret tuner for ITV fitted. Many of the original V4's were retro-fitted with this modification. The V4 originally cost £48-10-11 plus tax.
