Ekco TA201 television receiver, 1939. 7" vision only.

An Ekco TA201 vision-only television receiver made in England in 1939.

The internal electronics of this 7 inch television set are mounted on a steel frame which allowed the entire set to be easily removed from the cabinet for servicing. It cost 22 guineas when new. It is a ‘vision only’ set – which meant a saving of about £5 on the purchase price of a normal television by buying one which had no sound. The purchaser then had to rely on using a suitable radio set to amplify the television sound. This idea didn't really catch on however, as it saved comparatively little money in the real cost of construction of a television receiver.
