Railway carriage, London & North Eastern Railway, Buffet Car No. 9135, built York, 1937, teak body.

The London & North Eastern Railway pioneered quick snack catering services to attract passengers from road coach competitors in the 1930s. Buffets proved popular with passengers and have come to dominate catering on today’s railway.

Sir Nigel Gresley’s functional design meant that this buffet coach was well ahead of its time. However, in its 40 years of operation, design tastes changed dramatically and it was redecorated several times.
