Railway wagon, 12T Private Owner mineral wagon, Stanton Iron Works, 1931. Wagons like this kept Britain moving by carrying the coal, iron ore and other minerals so essential for industry, and for domestic cooking and heating. Many of them were privately owned by collieries or merchants, but licensed to run on the railways. This one is known as a five-plank wagon – a reference to the wooden construction of its body.
