Electric train services were introduced on the British Railways Southern Region line from Bournemouth to London Waterloo in 1967. A fleet of 11 4-REP Electric Multiple Units were built to work the service, with more added in the 1970s.

Each unit included a Trailer Restaurant Buffet car, all of which carried distinctive names with a regional connection. "The Hampton Court" was the buffet car of unit No. 3005. This glass panel formed part of the interior decoration in the buffet car and features images representing places of interest along the route.

These are the New Forest, Bournemouth, Eastleigh, Southampton, Winchester, Farnborough, Sandhurst, Bisley, Sandown, Hampton Court, Wimbledon, Clapham Transport Museum, Chessington Zoo, The Oval, Battersea Gardens, and Waterloo.
