Locomotive wheelset, Bristol & Exeter Railway, driving wheels from 4-2-4 Tender Loco No 40, painted black. 1873

These wheels were used on a locomotive of the Bristol & Exeter Railway and had a diameter of 8ft 10in. (270cm). They are believed to be the largest locomotive wheels in existence and were used on the broad gauge railway. The wheels are flangeless to help the locomotive negotiate sharp curves, much like the centre driving wheels on BR 92220 Evening Star.
