The British Railways Standard Class 5MT 4-6-0 locomotive was a development of the Stanier Black 5's, which had proved very successful in their mixed-traffic duties.

Locomotive No.73111 was built at Doncaster Works in 1956, and in 1959 the decision was made for 20 of the British Railways Southern Region locomotives to be named. Transferring the names from the retiring Southern Railway King Arthur Class locomotives, No.73111 was named King Uther.

In Arthurian legend, King Uther Pendragon is King Arthur's father, his biography first being committed to writing by Geoffrey of Monmouth.
