Power Unit, (engine and generator set), ex British Railways class 24 locomotive, Sulzer diesel engine

This diesel engine and its associated British Thomson-Houston electric generators is from a Class 24 Bo-Bo diesel-electric locomotive. The diesel engine is of Swiss design but was built by Vickers Ltd at Barrow-in-Furness under a licence agreement with Sulzer Brothers.

The engine has six cylinders and develops 1160hp. It was directly coupled to the electric generators, which produced a direct-current electrical supply to the motors mounted on the locomotive bogies. The electric motors moved the locomotive.

Above the generator is the turbo-charger, driven by exhaust gases, which supplied air to the diesel engine at above atmospheric pressure to increase combustion efficiency.

The blue pipes carried cooling water, the pink pipes carried lubricating oil and the brown pipes carried diesel fuel. Electrical wiring was enclosed in the orange conduit.
