Footbridge; North Eastern Railway; Cast Iron; ex Percy Main station

A notable feature of many North Eastern Railway stations was the cast iron footbridge connecting adjacent platforms of ordinary double track stations. This footbridge is from Percy Main station near North Shields on Tyneside, and is typical of NER practice.

This cast iron footbridge design was introduced in 1891 and about 50 are believed to have been built. They could be found throughout the North Eastern Railway’s network from Coldstream in the north to Thorne in the south. The bridges all have a 41ft central span but the disposition of the steps could be varied according to local requirements.
