Notice, wooden, "Men employed by famers must not cross the main lines to fetch milk cans", painted red with white text.
The railways were bound by rules and these helped keep workers and passengers safe. Signs declared what was allowed, and what would happen if rules were broken. Some of the warning notices are very long and required a good level of literacy to read and apply.
