WHSmith bookstall kiosk, British Railways (Southern Region), ex-Waterloo Station.

This bookstall was originally situated at Waterloo. There have been several bookstalls at Waterloo over the years and this one was situated opposite platforms 17 and 18 known as Waterloo Road Loop. Although the Loop got its first bookstall in 1862, it was replaced in 1922 by this model.

This bookstall sold a wide range of products, including the latest newspapers.

W H Smith boasted they were ‘First with the news’, and bookstalls like this one were well placed to benefit from the company’s efficient rail distribution network.

Once considered spacious, by the 1970s bookstalls like this one felt cramped and outdated. With nowhere to display stock, take breaks, or even hang their coats, staff demanded an upgrade.

Just as it had replaced another creaking structure decades earlier, this bookstall was removed from Waterloo Station in 1978 to make way for the new future of retail – walk-in stores.

This bookstall was restored in 2024. During the process the team discovered the original glass light box panels under numerous coats of paint. It is now on permanent display in Station Hall
