This bronze bust of William Stuart by Edward Davis (1813 - 1878) was mounted on the south side of the Great Howard Street bridge on the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway in Liverpool.

William Stuart was a well-known merchant in Liverpool and also served as the L&YR’s deputy-chairman from 1849 to 1859. The bust was originally situated within a large wreath plaque, with the date 1855 at the top. Stuart’s name was picked out in bold type beneath his bust, along with a crest featuring two lions and the motto “SPERO MELIORA” meaning “I hope for better things”.

Stuart was half way through his deputy-chairmanship when the bust was erected.
