Shunting horns were an important safety measure. They were used to warn nearby railway workers that a locomotive was about to move. Engine sheds were dangerous places and many rail workers were injured or even killed by rolling stock.

Shunter's horns usually have a loop. This allowed the horn to be easily carried by workers.
