Gunner's level in case

Gunner's level in case, made by George Adams the Younger, Fleet Street, London, 1772-1796.

This instrument was used to find the centre line of a cannon, which was used in aiming. It was placed on the barrel so that the central plunger (the blue steel index) was vertical. The plunger was then depressed to make a mark and a series of marks could be joined to create a line. Later models included a spirit level.
