Piece of wood, part of carriage door, relic of Penistone accident, 16 July 1884.

The Penistone accident took place at the Bullhouse Colliery signal box on the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway. The accident was caused by a broken axel. The resulting derailment led to parts of the train going over an embankment. The accident resulted in 24 fatalities with a further 64 injuries.
