Painting, oil on canvas, London Midland & Scottish Railway steamer SS Duke of York and other ships under fire, by Norman Wilkinson, about 1945. Depicts the passenger steamer serving as the Landing Ship Infantry HMS Duke of Wellington at the raid on Dieppe, 19th August 1942. The ship is at sea in wartime dazzle camouflage paint, surrounded by assault landing craft filled with troops. There are tall spouts of water astern of the ship, as bombs explode. Another steamer follows, and there is a Royal Navy destroyer on the Duke of York's starboard bow. There are aircraft overhead, two leaving trails of smoke as they dive out of control towards the sea. In the sky are smudges of smoke from the explosion of anti-aircraft shells. Signed by the artist at bottom right. A gummed label on the top left corner of the canvas has the inscription in ball point pen "Dieppe raid showing Duke of York". Created for The LMS at War series. Unframed.
