Painting, oil or acrylic on compressed board, 8ft single drive express engine, by Lucjan Pietka, about 1951. Depicts a left profile view of a Great Northern Railway Stirling single 4-2-2 locomotive, with the mouth of a tunnel above, a railway carriage, and semaphore signal. Above these is a depiction of Trafalgar Square, with the National Gallery and Nelson's Column enclosed in scaffolding, and a hot air balloon. A caption alongside reads "1858 Erection of Nelson's Column". The legend at the top of the panel reads "1870, The 8ft single-drive express engines developed by Patrick Stirling for the Great Northern Railway." On the reverse is written "MX1/H1C" and "4" and there is a gummed British Transport Commission label with the number 1399/4/52. One of four exhibition panels produced for the Festival of Britain of 1951 depicting the development of the locomotive and contemporary historical events. These were displayed on the festival ship HMS Campania, which toured British ports with a travelling exhibition.
