The knight holds a flag bearing the cross of St George, and the horse carries a red caparison, decorated with the coat of arms used by Carlisle between 1885 and 1924. Behind the knight is a gate in the city walls, with a road beyond leading to mountains in the distance visible through the gateway. To the left of the horse is Carlisle's coat of arms.
