Poster, British Railways, North Eastern Region, York, The Gateway to History by E H Spencer, 1955. Coloured lithograph depicting six head and shoulder portraits of historic figures set against a background of Bootham Bar and York Minster. The portraits feature a Roman soldier; a Norman soldier; an archbishop; a Parliamentarian 'roundhead' soldier from the Civil War; a man in eighteenth century dress; and a medieval knight. The illustration is signed at bottom right, and additional text reads "Guide from Information Centre, Public Library. Train services and fares from British Railways stations, offices and agencies." Text in the bottom margin reads "Published by British Railways (North Eastern Region) 55, Printed in Great Britain, The Baynard Press". Format double royal. Backed.
