Poster, British Railways North Eastern Region, York by E H Spencer, 1956. Coloured lithograph depicting York Minster with some of the city's historic buildings below. These include the city walls and its bars (gates), Clifford's Tower, St Mary's Abbey and the Mansion House. Beneath the buildings are the city's and Archbishop of York's coats of arms. On either side are the shields of England and people associated with the city. Depicted in the clouds above the Minster are historic figures with associations with York, including the Emperor Constantine, Vikings, Romans, Normans and Victorians. One of the figures could be construed as George Hudson. Text at the foot of the poster, interspersed with four Yorkist white roses, reads "York, See Britain by train. Eboracum of the Romans, Eoforwic of the Angles, Yorwik of the Vikings. 'The history of York is the history of England. H. M. King George VI when Duke of York".
