Seal die, Aberystwith & Welsh Coast Railway

Made:
1861

Seal die, steel, Aberystwith & Welsh Coast Railway, incorporated 1861. Bottom left: Four lions of Wales. Bottom right: Based on the arms of the De Clares and used by Cardiff before it was granted arms in 1906 with the addition of two lions rampant. At the time of the engraving Aberystwyth had no arms but used a device of a lion rampant looking backwards. Perhaps the lions are a corrupt representation of this device. Opened 1863 and absorbed by Cambrian Railways in 1866.
