Prototype gold assay balance, brass, in glazed mahogany case, c. 1852. Designed by G H Matkins and bulit by Ludwig Oertling, London. This design evolved into the famous Oertling model 12 series which revolutionised the design of assay balances worldwide in just a few years.

Circular ivory box engraved "Standard Gold Assay Weights L Oertling London", with no serial number. Contains an incomplete set of Carat weights. plus some oddments. Stored in left hand drawer of balance.
