More

This circular slide rule was designed and used by the ship-design expert William Froude. It

was manufactured by the prominent mathematical-instrument makers, Troughton &

Simms, and speeded up calculations.

Froude spent the 1870s carrying out a series of experiments on ship design using the

world’s first ship test tank, built by the Admiralty near his house in Torquay. He used the

slide rule in his work relating experimental results to mathematical theory.
