One-horse sleigh, thought to have been made between 1880 and 1890. Sleighs were an essential means of transport in the heavy snow of winter and continued to be used in areas of North America even after the motor car became popular. Sleighs were used for work and play and one-horse open sleighs like this were so common they featured in the now popular Christmas song, ‘Jingle Bells’. This song, written in 1857 by James Lord Pierpont was not originally intended to be a Christmas song, but was simply a joyful song about the winter in New England. The bells were worn by the horses that drove the sleighs and more a product of road safety than of amusement.
