Model of Cugnot's steam traction engine

Model of Cugnots Steam Traction Engine, Scale 1:5. The model (of the engine made in 1770) was made by Regnard Freres in 1892 in response to a purchase order from the Museum.

The first working steam-powered road vehicle was deigned by the French military engineer Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot. An experimental example was built in 1769 with funding from the French royal artillery. The larger, improved version represented by this model was intended to haul cannons, but was never put into service.
