Sample of third rail track, District Railway

Sample of third rail track, District Railway, comprising 2 sleepers and chairs, running and conductor rails with joints, bonds, insulators and feeder connections; together with the positive and negative current collecting shoes and their supports.

This shows the 600 volt third-rail equipment used on the Metropolitan District Railway, which was converted to electrical working in 1905. The positive conductor is mounted at one side of the track and an insulated return rail is placed in the centre.
