Length of rail from the Pen-y-darren tramway, Near Abercynon
1804
Six stone sleepers and two 3ft lengths of rail from the Penydarren tramway, near Abercynon.
The tramway known as Plymouth or Hill's Tramway, from Merthyr Tydfil to Abercynon, was constructed under the Glamorgan Canal Company's Act of 1796. It was opened in 1800 to carry iron from the Penydarren and other works to the Aberdare Canal, a distance of about nine miles. It is notable as being the line on which Richard Trevithick's locomotive experiments were made in 1804.
