Phoenix appears as number 6 on the Liverpool & Manchester Chairman's listof Engines. Rocket being number 1. In the general procession September 25 1830, the Phoenix was the second engine in "The Orders of the Day". It carried a green flag and was driven by 'Robert Stephenson Junior', the director in charge of the train was Mr Earle.

The image is a Rocket style locomotive with the pistons set at the lower angle to increase power effieciency.

Robert Stpehenson the son of George Stepenson had no children, Therefore the reference to the driver being Robert stephenson Junior may refer to an unrelated person who's father was also called Robert.

The object has a citation, 'This is an extremely rare print by Crane'; believed to be Thomas Crane (1808–1859), an English artist of some repute, who would have been 22 at the tine of the opening ceremony of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway.
