Type-printing telegraph original Murray instrument

In this system the transmitting operator worked an alphabet keyboard, and the signal was printed in plain language at the distant receiver. The function of the transmitting keyboard was to convert the keyed character automatically into 5-unit code, and of the receiving printer to convert the coded signals back into alphabet characters and to print them automatically on paper tape.

The 1896 model shown was a preliminary wooden model. The Murray System was introduced by the G.P.O after 1901, and between 1907 and 1912 was combined with the Baudot Multiplexing System to produce the Murray Type-Printing Multiplex.

From the Murray System has developed the present world-wide system of teleprinter telegraphy.
