Stroh's type-printer for Wheatstone ABC communicator, designed by J A M Stroh, made by the British Telegraph Manufactory, London, England, 1870-1881
Stroh's type-printer for Wheatstone ABC communicator, designed by J A M Stroh, made by the British Telegraph Manufactory, London, 1870-1881.
As designed, Wheatstone's ABC telegraph had the disadvantage that no printed record was made of messages received, the operator having to write them down during transmission. Augustus Stroh (1828-1914) was a skilled instrument maker. Born in Frankfurt, he came to Britain in 1851 and worked for Charles Wheatstone as chief engineer of the British Telegraph Manufactory (run by Wheatstone's brother-in-law). Stroh designed this printer for the ABC telegraph but it is not known how widely it was used.
