Telephone receiver, Crossley's patent 1880, unknown maker, British, 1880.

L J Crossley designed this improvement to the simple carbon pencil transmitter devised by David Hughes. Crossley used four carbon pencils to improve the sensitivity of the transmitter as well as this distance over which sounds could be transmitted. His transmitter was used with telephones manufactured by Blakey and Emmott, which were bought in large numbers by the British Post Office.
