This is a model of an old pattern manual lever rake made by Messrs. Howard of Bedford. It was awarded the prize by the Royal Agricultural Society in 1850.

This tines worked independently of each other so as to adapt themselves to any surface irregularities. The rake was operated from the rear of the machine by a long lever pivoted on the rear of crossbar of the horse shafts. By depressing the lever, the tines could be lifted and the ay released. The raising of the lever would again bring the tines into the required working position. This could be performed without stopping the hose. For transportation purposes the lever was retained in its lower position by means of a hook.
