1:4 scale model of patent reaping machine

This type was introduced by Messrs. J. and F. Howard of Bedford in 1967. The purpose of the bevel gearing on the rake bar arm was to make this rotate at its slowest speed as it passed over the deck to sweep away the crop as a sheaf. Simple reaper of this type were soon superseded for cereal crops by reaper binders but for crops such buckwheat, flax and clover, which were liable to shatter in binding, or needed leaving loose after cutting for further curing, there reapers held their own throughout the remainder of the 19th century.
