Model of Champion plough of England
Model of Howard's "Champion" plough of England, c. 1850, scale 1:4
This plough, made by J&F Howard Ltd,. about 1860, is fitted with a general purpose type of mouldboard and was used for Autumn ploughing.
Of interest is the skim, coulter fitted in front if the main coulter. It forms what is in fact a miniature plough and its purpose is to pare off the top of the furrow slice and bury the weeds. They are dropped in the trough which is then closed when the following slice is turned over. Skim coulters are very useful when ploughing up grassland or stubble.
