To avoid bruising the woad leaved they were transported in baskets in carts like this in 19th century. The use of woad, which was known to the ancient Britons, became an important industry in Medieval times. In Lincolnshire the plant was grown on a large scale form at least 1582, and the last woad mill was still in use at the beginning of the 20th century,
