A straw-rope maker, consisting of a curved metal hook attached to a wooden shaft with a cranked rotating handle.

This traditional hand tool was used for winding straw ropes. It also served the purpose of keeping the coils intact and thus preventing the rope from forming into obstinate twists.

Straw-rope makers are also known as “rope twisters” or "wimbles”. In Cornwall, they are referred to as “winks”.
