Mogul' 8/16 hp agricultural tractor on steel straked wheels with extension rims, by International Harvester Corporation Chicago, Illinois, USA, registration mark BD 9341, 1916. Engine: Serial No. SB 13826, single-cylinder gasoline (petrol)/ kerosene. International Harvester were the largest producers of tractors in the USA and dominated the market until the emergence of the Fordson Model 'F' in 1917. This particular model was in production from 1915 until 1917, and a number of them were imported into the UK during the First World War to assist the Ministry of Food Production in keeping British agriculture going during the shortage of both horses and forage to feed them. Both animals and feed were being requisitioned for use by the military, and the losses of horses were particularly high. The 8/16 refers to a nominal power output designation; 8 horse power at the drawbar (for pulling implements and other loads), and 16 horse power at the pulley wheel (for driving farm machinery)
